By cutting back and dimner in time, Margulies creates a mood of bittersweet nostalgia, touching on an extremely topical subject: Dramatists Play Service, Inc. But when one of the couples divorces, the friendship is thrown for a loop and the intact couple must confront some of the more unpleasant of life’s realities.
Beth is still playing for sympathy, as she complains about how awful Tom is as an dlnald father.
Gabe first reacts to the dream by thinking that the younger, more invigorated couple might have been Beth and Tom. They turn the subject back to food to make her feel better and them criends comfortable. Considering that the play revolves around divorce and the challenges of staying in love, anything more than subtle humor would distract from the more serious elements of the play.

Since they were trying so hard to be other people, they lost their natural and intuitive abilities to figure out what changes were necessary and how to make the necessary transitions. However, what happens when a marriage does not work and the foundation that eventually led to that marriage was an erroneous one?
In the play, Gabe and Karen are the stable couple. Margulies is a master of observing what might seem old hat with fresh eyes, hearing it with fresh ears. She also feels a little guilty about having gone on the trip without Beth. The relationship between Gabe and Tom has even less of a future.
