Furious, Horry rushes away running into Lady Caroline Massey who recognizes her. To Rule’s surprise, she confesses all and it’s the most delightful thing and if only they’d kissed and it gsorgette ended there!
Books by Georgette Heyer. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising and her heroes dashing.
The great thing about this book is that Horatia is actually, genuinely normal. I do not find her heroes interchangeable. She mentions this twice, and it sounds unhygienic, not to mention really strange-looking. View all 9 comments. She is off on a series of unfortunate events convenint social follies.
One of her earlier books and set in the Georgian Era, the writing does not yet possess her command of the genre as she shows in later years, yet her descriptive style was already fully developed. Combine that with Richard Armitage as a narrator, and the delightful snippets of music between chapters, and The Convenient Marriage comes as close to perfect as anyone can ask of a story.

How on earth did I only give this 4 stars the first time?!? Anyway, this book is a tremendous amount of fun. I found Horry adorable, loved the Earl, and though you want to shake both of them at various times, it isn’t in a ‘you’re annoyingly, badly written’ sort of way.
I abseloutely loved the characters!!! It is psychological study rather than anything else, and quite timeless in the sense that it might, except for few details of cars and telephones etc have been set at any time.
I did like Rule; he reminded me of Diana Wynne Jones ‘s Chrestomanci, with his vagueness and his deceptive intelligence and the laziness that makes everyone underestimate him. The hero, Rule, he gets right again by remembering the adage that less is more.

Jan 05, Angie rated it really liked it Shelves: Coming up against unfamiliar terminology did pull me out of the story, although not catastrophically.
Jan 06, Kerry rated it really liked it. Be still my beating heart! Hers was a marriage made not in heaven but in the coolly logical mind of a very self-possessed young.
I have enjoyed most of Georgette Heyer’s mysteries, but this one is a little strange.
Cartland sets her heroes and heroines in a similar regency setting, but that is all the two authors have in common.
